The Obama administration, presenting itself as an ally to student debtors, has worked to make the federal student loan program more generous to them and argues that its efforts will mean more than $108 billion in student debt will eventually be forgiven.
If you are one of the millions of Americans struggling to pay student loans, you should be aware that there is Federal help available. If you struggle financially, or have a qualified employer, you may be eligible for forgiveness.
How Does it Work?
Congress has acted to provide benefits to Federal loan holders. These programs are Federal law and available to eligible loan holders. There are many programs that can forgive your student loans or significantly reduce your payment to as low as $0.
“When I enrolled in college, they all but assured me I would be able to get a good paying job once I got my diploma. Since I graduated, I haven’t been able to find a job in my field. Now the loan companies call me every day and harass me for payments that I can’t afford.”
“I worry every day if I’m ever going to save enough to get
out of this apartment so that my son has a yard to plan in”
“I can’t get a new car, buy a house, or get married with all of this debt weighing me down. I wanted to go to school to live the American dream, now all I do is have nightmares on how I’ll ever get ahead.
